Two Bags

“Excuse me? I’ve seen you around the neighborhood and you always have two bags. I noticed today, you only have one.”

“I was just able to find enough cans for one bag today.”

“I have some cans you can have. Wait here. I’ll be right back.”

Gail is a friendly neighbor that observes the happenings in her community. Living in the house she grew up in, she has observed many changes. One of the changes has been the increase of people living homeless.

When Gail made the decision to engage with a homeless man in her neighborhood, some people thought Gail was taking quite the risk. However, Gail prayed before the encounter. She asked God to help her overcome her fear so that she could show kindness without him detecting her being out of her comfort zone.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding: in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

Proverbs 3:5,6

When she engaged with the man, she made it clear from the beginning of her conversation that she had noticed him. She learned his name when she introduced herself. She showed him dignity, respect and grace.

The two enjoyed a 45-minute conversation that may had never happened had Gail not been willing to ask her LORD to help her.
