I had never been to the famous Elevator in Oregon City even though I have lived in Oregon for 10 years. My husband surprised me with a visit. As we reached the top of elevator, I suddenly began to put the city together. I was given a new perspective.
A new perspective can bring needed understanding. Whether we are meeting people of a different culture, background, lifestyle, or affiliation, gaining their perspective can be one of the best ways to understand what is important to them, what they enjoy and what they may need. It’s so important not to assume that someone wants what you want to give.
It reminds me of the story of the “good citizen” seeing a blind person at the street corner. He stops the traffic and makes sure it is safe before he crosses the blind person across the street. It looked like such a great thing to do for someone else. The only problem was that the blind person was never desiring to cross the street.
Getting a different perspective is found in a different community than may you are used to. By meeting and conversing with others our ideas are shaped. Sometimes we learn we have made huge assumptions about others. Sometimes we learn that we have believed a lie due to isolation and only being left with our own thoughts.
