Sometimes, there needs to be a change in the community you belong. It may be necessary because you need to relocate, or it may be because you have discovered that the community you have belonged to for so long is primarily because of familiarity. It doesn’t offer hope or promise of a better life. It merely offers familiarity, understanding of being in the “same boat” going through life without answers.
In Acts 11, Barnabas arrives in Antioch to find a community of people that showed evidence of the grace of God. It was primarily made up of Gentiles, (people that God had reached out to after His own had rejected Him.) They may have had similar back grounds, but they had entered into a new community. A community that exemplified the grace of God.
A community that holds together because of the grace of God applied to their life, is a healthy, life-giving community. Everyone in the community understands that God’s grace is freely given to those that don’t deserve it. When the gospel is truly understood in a community, it binds people closer together than anything else they could have in common.
How’s your community? It is one thing to be on the same road in life, it is another to walk with someone on the same road. Walking with someone is community. Are you on the road that leads to abundant life? Don’t walk it alone. Are you on the road that leads nowhere? Maybe it’s time to find a new community…a community that shows evidence of the grace of God.
