“While community does not inoculate us against sin, godly community is a sweet balm of safety. It gives us a place and a season where we are safe with ourselves and safe with others.”
The Gospel Comes with a House Key, Rosaria Butterfield
Safety is found in the local church. It’s safe to share your heart, to share the situations you face or even to “tell on yourself” about a situation you may not have handled so great. The safety is because everyone in the local church recognizes that they too have “fallen short” and that they live in a world broken by sin. Jesus has offered them safety.
Are we approachable? Usually a person thinks you are “safe” or worth the risk of sharing is because you have either a.) Demonstrated that you are a good listener, or b.) You have some type of title that proceeds you that indicates it’s your job to help. In either case, we need to understand that if someone is willing to share where they are struggling in life, they have taken a risk that needs to be honored.
Many are looking for a safe place to belong. They have questions and concerns. Are you a part of the local church? Do you have a community that is a safe for others to come and see how everyone in your community listens and supports others with prayer and godly counsel? Consider inviting someone into your community. You may be surprised how people are just waiting for an invitation.
