As the weather gets colder in the Fall, it can be a challenge to engage with neighbors. People tend to stay inside, especially the elderly or disabled. It can become a very isolating time.
With the colder change in weather, also comes the busyness of preparing for the holiday season. This can also be a challenge for neighbors that live alone or single parents.
Most people that are lonely will utter these words, “I don’t want to bother anyone.” The truth of the matter is they need help with their yards being raked or houses prepped for the change in weather. They may also need visits more than any time of the year.
“To care for those who once cared for us is one of the highest honors.”

As one neighbor to another, let’s not only think about our lonely neighbors, but make a plan of attack on the loneliness on our street. You may not be able to solve loneliness everywhere, but you can make a positive impact in the lives of those living alone or away from family.
Neighborly Ideas for the Fall
- Make a flier for the neighbors on your street that shares a date and time you and your family, or other neighbors are available to help with raking leaves, mowing lawns or trimming bushes. (Whatever service you are comfortable providing.) Leave your contact number to sign up for help.
- Maybe you miss your grandkids, and you just need some help or company. Invite neighbor kids to join you in yard work and reward them with homemade cookies or pie.
- Share an extra casserole with a neighbor on your street. Include the recipe. Better yet, organize a casserole recipe exchange among your neighbors!
- Share your kids sports event dates with your neighbors. It’s not only a way to encourage your kids, but it also builds community with your neighbors. (Grandparents away from their grandchildren love to attend sport events, recitals and school plays. Just sayin’.)
- If none of the above ideas are doable, fake a need to borrow sugar, eggs or milk from your neighbor as a way to check in. You might open the door to more conversation. You might also discover that your neighbor has needs that you were unaware of.
