Making the Most of Opportunities (Part 1)

Sometimes, as Christians, we don’t see opportunities to shine for Jesus. They can be overlooked because they seem too small to have an impact. But if we are wise, we will think carefully of where there is an opportunity, no matter how small, and seize it! And then there are the times that God just puts the opportunity right at your front door.

“Be very careful, then, how you live – not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.

Ephesians 5:15-16

This year we planned on passing out candy for Halloween like we have done in the past. We usually had very few kids come by. Nothing had really changed, or so we thought. We had no idea that we would receive a neighborhood text asking if anyone would be willing to pass out candy around 10am?

The neighbor making the request runs a daycare from her home and wanted to take the little kids out. This opportunity was possible for us for the last three years, but we never saw it. Our neighbor, however, thought of it this year and reached out to the neighbors on our street.

My husband gladly obliged and what seemed to be such a small request became a memory making day. My husband dressed up as a banana for the kids coming that morning. Yes, that’s right…a banana.

It was such a great opportunity and I think Banana Man will become a new tradition on the street. The daycare neighbor thinks so too!

Though I doubt the writer of Ephesians had any thoughts of Banana Man and kids getting candy, I do think this was an opportunity that was coming to us that we couldn’t deny. It was an opportunity to strengthen relationships with our neighbors, give children a safe place to come and plant seeds of kindness.
