Have you ever seen the expression “I’m a whosoever”? It refers to the later part of the scripture verse John 3:16; “…whosoever believes in Him has everlasting life.” There is another category of verses in the Bible called the “One Another” verses.
The verses that speak of “one another” are the verses that speak of at least two people having to be involved to fulfill the meaning of the verse. One of those many verses is found in Proverbs 27:17, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”
Recently, I have noticed that some people that say they follow Christ become defensive when they are asked where they attend church or what believers do they meet with on a regular basis. I hear reasons of being too busy, to not finding a church that meets their needs to “I have a very close relationship with Jesus. I read my Bible and pray. I even watch sermons online.” I can’t help but think when I am speaking to such individuals, “They are missing out on such a wonderful gift provided by Christ; His body.”
Some people that tell me that they used to go to church. Sometimes they tell me that they were hurt in church or they disagreed with something that happened in their church. In each case, there is either a wound, bitterness or an experience that didn’t make the person long for the fellowship of believers. Maybe they had never known preciousness of someone to bear their burdens being the same person that might impart some wisdom to prevent some unwanted circumstances.
The truth is, to follow Jesus means to obey the scriptures. Iron alone cannot sharpen itself. It takes two. As Christians we need each other encourage and to hold each other accountable. We need our brother and sisters to cry, laugh and pray with each other. I cannot be “sharpened” by myself. I need others.
If you are thinking you are doing just fine without fellowshipping with other Christians, please think again. You need others and the reverse is also true. We need you as well. If you know someone that says they follow Christ, but does not fellowship with other believers, extend an invitation to come with you to where you fellowship.
