It’s so important for Christians to meet people where they are and not expect them to take it upon themselves to attend church on their own, or seek you out for questions they might have. On occasion, however, people do visit that are unchurched. This may be their one and only attempt towards looking for God. So, we want to be prepared and look for new faces.

Here are some things to keep in mind whether you are a greeter at your church or don’t have a service role during the service.

1. Introduce yourself, introduce the visitor to a friend and invite them to sit with you in the service. If you are a greeter and cannot “leave your post”, introduce them to someone that can befriend them. This is a great way to reduce the social anxiety that can accompany first time visitors.
2. Consider taking them to lunch after the service. Learn to come to church anticipating God to use you in this way. This means not making plans immediately after church.
3. Exchange phone numbers and give them a call during the following week. During the phone call ask how you can pray for them and invite them to the church small group you attend.

In your engaging, keep in mind that may not understand some of the terms used during a church service. Words or phrases like, “the blood of the lamb”, redemption, repentance, salvation, trinity, etc. may be very foreign to them. They may not know how to navigate a Bible. Bring yours with you to church, so that you can model how to look up scriptures referenced during the service.
